Old Sattankuppam Village - Pulicat Lake - Tamil Nadu
Old Sattankuppam is a deserted village. it took 20 minutes to travel by boat from Pulicat. Most buildings and thatched roof huts appear empty. Palm trees blow in the breezes that generously come off the nearby ocean shore. Forty families, out of four hundred, remain scattered about, refusing to leave their home compounds. There is word that the government plans to sell the village land to build an ocean side resort. If that is true, Sattankuppam was not relocated for safety sake post tsunami; it was relocated for political and financial reasons. This is the possible cause of the present rift in the community, although, historically, Sattankuppam has had violent clashes between opposing political parties, causing mass migration, separation, deep distrust and fragmentation of community.
